A Friday Evening !

Yesterday ... !
It was Friday evening and I was all set to leave office when my watch beeped to signal it was 6.00 pm . Happily shutting down my Mac and bidding good bye to my colleagues I picked my things and strode out of office. As I reached the door and stepped out in the open I was welcomed by a gush of cold wind on my face. It was one of those lightened yet gloomy Bangalorean sky. With music plugged in I headed to the bus stop , this time not my regular one. I was heading to our other home at the far end of the city as my husband wanted me to come over there for the weekend. I usually get back home to my in-laws but not this day.. my journey back home was going to be longer. I boarded one of those dynamic red Volvo’s and settled happily in a seat near the window, not coz I was obsessed with window seat in an AC bus but the view would be clear to keep myself entertained in what was going to be a nearly two and a half our journey. The bus seemed to move at snails pace as I was travelling out of one of those famous IT jungles of the city. As I stared out of the window dreaming vaguely and staring at some point in the sky absent mindedly a rain drop hit the glass window of the bus. My playlist seemed to be in sync with the weather, my mom’s favorite song started playing , A song she always loved and wanted to sing to me. I usually call her whilst leaving office to let her know I was going home so she wouldn’t have to worry living in Chennai for her kid’s safety. For some reason I did not call her this eve.. I dozed of dreaming about the rainy days of my childhood when I used to hold the window bars and blow droplets off while I kept an eye out for the sign of mom or dad’s arrival from work.. Memories of mom’s hot pakodas or bajjis reminded me of my hungry tummy rumbling yet I went on with my dreams.. those good old days when mom and me had fun picking up mangoes in our backyard that came crashing on the muddy ground during stormy evenings.. the times when she held me close and tight when a thunder struck believing I would get scared .. I was never afraid but I enjoyed her warmth which she never knew.. dad would come home and I would rush free from her asking him for a motor boat ride on his scooter which gave the boat ride effect in stagnant water. He never complained , he would take me for a ride even during the down pour with both of us wearing our respective duckback raincoats. We both would come back after the ride singing loudly out of tune and enjoy watching TV together with mom.  Smiling to myself I was suddenly shaken out of my dreams when my mobile rang ..it was MOM !

Where in the world are you now ?? she yelled ..
I responded “on the bus back home mom” sheepishly

Can’t you even call and tell me that what were you even thinking ?
Sorry mom .. It’s raining here and I kept dreaming of your hot bajjis

She laughed and became silent .. I knew what she felt.. I started my rants about office .. I dint want her to feel bad. I ranted for almost an hour until I reached home partly drenched intentionally , had dinner and went to bed expecting dear hubby to come home early . He gently woke me up and the first question he asks me : hey Did you call MOM today ?

Yeah I spoke to her … She called me !

Ayubowan Sri Lanka

Warning : This is a REALLY Long post !

Now go ahead read it :)

Six months from the day of engagement each day had brought me closer to him. Now Husband and Wife for 2 weeks we are not one of those strange couples coming together after an Arranged Marriage. I knew him well and one such thing about him is : If he does not plan it now then I need to be ready to support him during his Emergency Planning phase in the future. Everything including the destination was decided and planned ? did we ? fine lemme call it planning just 4 days before the journey !!

26th of May , Sunday afternoon Arjun and me were on our flight to the Paradise island ~ Ceylon aka Sri Lanka. An hour and a half journey we were there and from the moment of landing till our departure we were swept away by the warmth and serenity of the country.

From the airport we drove to the city of Kandy the second largest city of the country in the Central Province of Lanka and home to Buddha’s Temple of Tooth Relic. Driving into the Color and Lights of the city we were swept by the beauty of the creative lanterns and pandols that adorned every home, buildings and roads of the city. It was then we got to know that in May the Vesak (Buddha’s Birthday) was celebrated and lanterns were lit to pay homage to the birth , enlightenment and death of Lord Buddha. A blissful night at the Thilanka Resort where we were welcomed with the freshly brewed Ceylone tea. The next day a Visit to the Temple of Tooth Relic and then Elephant Safari followed by a visit to the Pinnewala Elephant orphanage ! then the wood carving and batik making centres.

Next couple of days was pure relaxation at the Cocoon resort. Playing in the gently lapping waves of the Indian Ocean we spent time on the warm shores and soft beach sand of Beruwala & Bentota. Here we had been to a turtle hatchery where we played with one year old turtles ! Boat safari in the estuary of Madu ganga which houses 64 islands. During the ride we watched a boatman pull out a Jelly fish alive to show off , got a glimpse of the water monitor lizard and King fishers waiting patiently for their fish prey, prawn fishing, Fish spa in the middle of the river from hundreds of small fishes, we caught hold of a baby crocodile in our hands , visiting an island with the Buddhist monastery where a monk showed us an 150 year old book made out of palm leaves, another island where only one family lived to make products from cinnamon, another island that had 250 families living in it and was connected to the mainland via a bridge, in and out of the mangrove forest we finally saw the place where the river enters the sea at Balapitiya.

Then we geared up for our last two days at Colombo . Halting at Mount Lavinia beach we headed for the sunset view from Global Towers our resort that stared upon the ocean front. Stepping out into the balcony from our room on the third floor it was a breath taking view of the ocean, sunset and strong winds that could blow one of the feet. Tempted we walked to the beach to play with the waves and golden sand.

Last day was the city tour of Colombo , the largest city of the country we drove around getting a glimpse of the Galle road, Galle face green, Temple Trees – Lankan President’s home , two World Trade Centre towers, Bank of Ceylon, Town Hall of Colombo, UN office , BMICH , the Nelum pokuna theatre, visit to Sri Lankan Cricket board’s office & Independence Memorial Hall and did some last minute shopping.

Back in India at my desk as I write this post I feel the bliss of my trip wishes being fulfilled completely:
